OBITUARY
MR. JAMES DOUGAN SAWYER,
Tinonee lost an old and highly respected resident at 8 a.m. on Friday, when Mr. James Dougan Sawyer passed
away at his home, after a long and trying Illness.
He was born at Dingo Creek 72 years ago, and went to Tinonee 59 years ago residing there for
the rest of his life.
He was well known in the district as a road and bridge contractor for the Manning Shire Council.
He possessed a splendid team of horses, which were used to haul timber from the bush.
Mr. Sawyer was a prominent cricketer in his younger days, and had the reputation of being
one of the fastest bowlers in the State.  In one season he headed the bowling average for the
Manning Cricket Association.
Deceased was a man of quiet habits, whose even temper, generous nature, and pleasing
personality won for him a wide circle of friends.
Some 49 years ago he was married to Miss Alice Gore, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs
Henry Gore, of Tinonee.
In addition to his widow he is survived by the following children: Messrs. Henry Sawyer
(Wingham), Ernest (Tinonee), William (Mondrook), Frederick (Tinonee), Mrs.
Neville Dennes (Tinonee). The late Mrs. T. Hicks, of Nowendoc, was a
daughter.
Mr. John W. Sawyer, of Tinonee, is his only brother. The sisters were the late Mrs. Wilkes, of
Macksville, and the late Mrs. Susannah Brown, of Wherrol Flat.
At 11 a.m. to-day (Saturday) Rev. L. Ayscough will conduct a service in St. Luke’s Church,
Tinonee, after which the funeral will proceed to the Tinonee cemetery.
Mr. W. T. Howard will carry out the funeral arrangements.
