The History of the Australian Murrays from Roxburghshire by Joan Murray 1981:
“In 1851 James married Bridget Ryan at St George’s Free Presbyterian Church in Sydney, the ceremony being performed by the Rev Alexander Salmon. It is generally thought that Bridget Ryan, who was an immigrant from Northern Ireland and originally a Roman Catholic migrated to Australia on the same ship as the Murray’s, the “Castle Eden”.
Bridget became a Free Presbyterian on her marriage and the union produced 12 children.
The James Murray’s first took up residence at Mondrook but after sustaining floods for three consecutive years they moved to Oxley Island where they remained until James died in 1893.
It is said that when James died on 5th July 1893 the Gollan family of Tinonee went down the river to Oxley Island on the steam tug “John Gollan” and brought the casket back to Tinonee for the funeral service.”
“The children of the marriage were brought up strictly in the Presbyterian faith.”
